Now I really feel old Aug. 5th, 2009 @ 01:51 am
I actually NEED to upgrade my computer, for the first time in almost three and a half years. I got a new video card in December, but my old one died so it wasn't really an upgrade so much as a replacement. Anyway, I wanted to play Dawn of War 2, and even though Pantheon (my computer) exceeds the system requirements, the game literally gets 1 frame per twenty seconds, my CPU, dual core though it may be, just can't handle it. The game eats up 100% of the CPU clock cycles on both cores, making it impossible to play. The whole game seems to be built on the Company of Heroes engine, which has no issue running on my machine, but I guess something eventually had to push the old beast over the edge.

It all just surprises me, it didn't even hit me that this thing is actually that old. I think this is the longest I've ever run with the same CPU, Motherboard, RAM, and for three years, the same Hard Drive and Video Card. I only ran Avatar for about two and a half years before it died, and I never really got around to fixing it because I had already built Pantheon here. So I'm upgrading from a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ clocked at 2.41 GHz (dual core) to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ clocked at 3.1 GHZ (dual core). The new one cost me about $60.00, and according to my post when I built Pantheon, my original CPU ran me $632.00. I guess that goes to show that you get what you pay for, I've used the thing for nearly three and a half years and up until now it's run EVERYTHING.

There's nothing else I can really upgrade on my computer, it's RAM, CPU, and GPU will all be up to the best stuff that was made for their standards. I guess I'll have to build a new computer sometime next year.

I hate Allies Jul. 18th, 2009 @ 02:50 am
Really, they're assholes.

I started a new game in Empire Total War because I finally have a little free time this weekend. I started out as England because they're easy to play, get good units, have good starting tech, and have a lot of income early on. On the fourth motherfucking turn of the game, my ally Austria declares war on France and Spain. This drags me into the war. So during the enemy turn, France kills one of my fleets (that was going to join my stronger fleet) and captures a port that I had designated to build my trade fleet. My trade ships (the number one source of income in the game) were half a turn away from completion. I hate allies, anytime I try to have a nice plan, build up my forces, or grow stronger, they fuck my shit up. And it's like like I said "Hey Austria, you wanna be friends?", no, they start out as your god damned ally, there's nothing you can do. At least in Making History you can edit the file that has the starting alliances in it, so you can just make everyone alone, but that's not the case here. Fuck it, I'ma go play me an FPS.

Recent Stuff Jul. 7th, 2009 @ 01:59 am
Classes started again. So far in PL SC 442, we've just recapped on the prisoner's dilemma. In COMM 150 we've talked about the origins of film, early film, and we've watched "It Happened One Night" (circa 1934). Both classes are hella reading intensive, probably totaling ~100 pages a night. In fucking textbooks and dry articles written by various other professors.

I am currently sick with a viral infection (hence the Nathan Explosion puking blood icon I use when I'm sick), but it's not H1N1. Mostly I just have a sore throat, runny nose and raspy cough. My fever decided to die on Thursday, as did my other symptoms. Now I just take 2 Sudafed and 3 Ibuprofen every four to six hours and I'm fine.

I got back into my weight lifting regimen, which is good, and I've been eating healthier. And by healthier I mean I eat less in general, absolutely no candy, far fewer cheese stakes and double bacon cheese burgers, and I mostly drink water or diet iced tea now. I've tried getting some decent heat-and-eat stuff from giant, but I've been wholly dissatisfied. Normally I'd just get stuff to make regular food, but there's a few problems with that:

A: I'm lazy as fuck.
B: I hate doing dishes by hand and my apartment doesn't have a dishwasher.
C: I never know what I'm in the mood to eat, so perishables generally go bad before I get to use them.
D: I have no form of entertainment anyplace near my kitchen, and watching water boil sucks.

On to my final talking point tonight. I got a prescription for Ambien because of my weird insomnia. Apparently it doesn't just come and go for most people. Also, the doctor couldn't find any discernible cause for my sleep problems. Anyway, I took one the other night (and would have tonight if I had not had to stay up late reading for my class tomorrow morning), and within five minutes I was all tingly, and within fifteen minutes I could no longer read the text on my computer screen. I went to bed and was asleep in five minutes. On a good day it takes me an hour to fall asleep, on a bad day, five to six hours; so twenty minutes is really fucking awesome. I'll probably only use it on Sunday nights to keep my sleep schedule on track, or maybe before holidays to ensure I'm alert at family gatherings.

Peace out y'all!

America had a party. Jul. 5th, 2009 @ 08:10 am
I went to the same birthday party for America that my friends host every year, and this is how kickass it was this year: When I woke up, I checked my wallet (I always check my stuff after a night of drinking to make sure I haven't lost anything) and I had FROSTING in it! I repeat, I had FROSTING in my WALLET!

That is all.

T'was the night before the new semester... Jun. 30th, 2009 @ 11:58 pm
And here's what I had in my backpack before I cleaned it out. Some granola bar wrappers, a box of tissues, an old receipt, a five year old pack of Skittles, some pens and pencils, some math equipment (protractor, calculator, ext), an umbrella, and seventy cents in loose change. Oh yeah, there were also ~50 rounds of .45 ACP hollow point, 15 rounds of 12-Gauge three-inch magnum 00 buckshot, and 25 rounds of 12-Gauge low-velocity game load.

Please keep in mind that I've removed the wrappers, receipt, and ammunition, but I left the Skittles there. I plan on putting in my new notebook and textbooks once I post this.

Good night y'all.

Contemporary Life May. 30th, 2009 @ 01:59 am
So for those of you who don't know, I moved into an apartment two weeks ago. It's great, I'm four blocks from downtown/work/college, and I'm right between a beer store and a liquor store!

Anyway, I start classes again on July 1st, but then I get the third off and the fourth and fifth are a weekend. I have COMM 150 and PL SC 442 for the summer semester and an eclectic assortment of classes this fall. What's great about the fall semester is I have no classes on Tuesday/Thursday and all my classes are blocked between 10:10 AM and 2:15 PM on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

Recently I've been working about eight hours a day, then running errands, then getting home, eating dinner, taking codeine (prescription) and falling asleep. Today is really the first day I've had more than an hour of free time all this week. Last week I was playing a veritable assload of Fallout 3 (which is a bitchin' awesome game). My current nightly routine is drinking a beer whilst reading the news and my email.

Speaking of news, has anyone other than me been paying attention to North Korea recently? How is this shit not front page news all over the nation? They detonated a nuclear device, their leader hasn't been see or heard from recently (other than N Korean military officials saying they talked to him) and they keep testing long range ballistic missiles. Remember how George Bush tricked the nation into agreeing to invade Iraq because they might be thinking about developing nuclear weapons? Now this guy/country is far more crazy than Saddam/Iraq ever was, and they HAVE FUCKING NUCLEAR BOMBS NOW! They also said that South Korea's entrance into an anti-proliferation council was an act of war, so North Korea said they no longer recognize the 1953 armistice agreement, which mean North and South Korea are at war. What the fuck, how is everyone ignoring this? All the news outlets are still talking about the economy and American Idol and General Motors. CNN's headline story today was about how the the 1960's vision of the 21st century does not match how the early 21st century is. What the fuck?
